After an 8% drop in 2011, European gas consumption has fallen again in 2012, by 3% or -16 billion cubic meters (bcm). The decrease was mainly in the electricity production sector where competition with renewable energy and coal has sharply lowered the usage levels of gas-fired power plants. The gas consumption of power plants dropped 43% in the United Kingdom, 22% in Spain and 13% in Italy.
