Make energy savings. Whether at the design or implementation stage, our experts are on-hand to offer you advice and guide you in improving the energy efficiency of your sites

Produce and consume carbon-free energy by:

  • Generating electricity using renewable resources. We inform you of the technologies available and their performance, conduct feasibility and profitability studies and develop partnerships for on-site production (biomass, wind power and solar power)
  • Consuming electricity from renewable resources. We endeavour to offer you a guarantee of the origin of the electricity that we supply to you, notably via our hydroelectric park
  • Negotiating CO2 emission credits or compensating your residual carbon emissions

Guarantee the security of your staff and the safety …of your sites by:

  • Proposing training and coaching in order to better monitor and use your equipment
  • Conducting audits focusing on the security of your sites

Anticipate regulatory changes. Regulatory requirements are constantly being developed and reinforced. Keeping track of and interpreting all of the information in the energy and environment field is a difficult task for a company. By regularly sharing clear and understandable information with you, we help you to anticipate these changes and limit the impact that they have on your activity.

  • Energy audit

Study of your entire manufacturing site or of specific equipment in order to determine the potential to save energy and reduce pollution.

Producing more whilst consuming and polluting less.

RIO TINTO ALCAN (France) owns aluminium meltingfurnaces, which are complex and energy-intensive in their operation. Called upon to deal with a maintenance issue, the GDF SUEZ Global Energy experts applied a series of measurements and a digital simulation in order to diagnose the malfunctions and determine the furnace’s capacity to progress.

Significant results were achieved, in particular:

    • Reduction in energy consumption (2,000MWh, i.e. 4%/year)

    • Lowering of CO2 emissions (360T/year) and CO emissions

    • 20-25% increase in productivity
    • 30% decrease in maintenance costs

You made us reconsider principles taken for granted. Thanks for being critical, you made us improve.

    Consume less and Pollute less.

Before being moved on to steam-heated treatment baths, the galvanised sheet metal produced by ArcelorMittal Atlantique at DESVRES (France) is preheated to 800°C in a natural-gas furnace.

Keen to establish energy savings, the site called upon the experts of GDF SUEZ Global Energy to conduct a technical and economic study centring on recovering energy from the furnace fumes. After conducting an appraisal and on-site measurements, our experts recommended the installation of a recovery boiler to heat the galvanization baths. The site has implemented this solution and is today seeing a 15% reduction in its gas consumption and its CO2 emissions (2,600T/year), a project that has proved profitable after two years.

You brought us skills we didn’t have and helped us arrive at our decision.

  • Audit of gas installations

Regulatory and safety expertise for your natural gas network.

Manufacturers’ gas networks aided by GDF SUEZ

The General Electric (Belfort) site, which produces gas turbines, is already very familiar with natural gas. Nevertheless, for its internal network, it called on the expertise of GDF SUEZ Global Energy within the framework of a Regulatory Council in order to gain a better understanding of the regulations affecting their plant and gas equipment.

This enabled General Electric to measure the complexity and challenges associated with its plant’s gas network, which is why it entrusted its Network Examination to our experts.

With their analysis of the situation completed, General Electric selected Endel, a specialist subsidiary of GDF SUEZ, to carry out the works to ensure the compliance of its gas piping.

General Electric was convinced by the expertise/implementation pairing  in order to bring its ageing gas network up to the standard of its current security requirements.

Securing the natural-gas network means securing our staff, our production and our industrial heritage

  • Electrical network and equipment audit

Regulatory and security expertise for your electricity distribution and your specific equipment (transformers, cables, etc.)

Assessing the life expectancy of “strategic” equipment

The Gonfreville site has a network of 20kV impregnated-paper three-core cables dating back to 1970, and any “breakdown” can trigger a non-programmed stoppage, with significant consequences.

TOTAL Petrochemicals therefore wanted to determine the condition of its cables in order to schedule their replacement where appropriate.

After a series of measurements incorporating several electrical tests on the insulators, the GDF SUEZ Global Energy experts identified the “at risk” cables and made predictive-maintenance recommendations.

Being aware of the condition of strategic equipment and improving its reliability is a major challenge

  • Special studies

Renewable-energy installation studies, change in energy, analysis and resolution of equipment malfunctions, development of the manufacturing site, training and coaching, etc.

At the very heart of the industrial process

In order to strive ever further to reduce energy needs and prepare for the future demands of environmental legislation, the group works in partnership with customers. From time to time, our Research and Innovation teams embark on a study of the industrial procedures themselves.

ArcelorMittal has benefitted from this know-how within the context of a joint research project with GDF SUEZ. The study focused on a high-yield regenerative burner for direct-flame preheating reduction zones on galvanised sheet production lines.

The research project gave promising results that we now wish to confirm with a first industrial application.

Volvo Europa Trucks, in Gent, the world’s first vehicle production site to achieve zero CO2 emissions.

The Gent plant has chosen to cover its energy needs using an original energy mix. As such, photovoltaic panels and three wind turbines were installed on the site, covering half its electricity needs. The remaining electricity, hydraulic in origin, is 100% renewable (AlpEnergie 100 by GDF SUEZ).

Furthermore, 70% of the Gent plant’s heating needs is covered by a new biomass installation. The remaining 30% is provided by a natural-gas and biofuel boiler. Thanks to this global approach led by GDF SUEZ while vehicle production has increased by a third, energy consumption has fallen by 23% and 15,000 tons of CO2 have been saved!

Primary energy stores are limited, and the efficient use of renewable energy sources is set to present one of the major challenges of the 21st century.
